SugarPill: A New Kind Of Apothecary

SugarPill is a dispensary of medicinal and culinary herbs, spices, gourmet salts, chocolates, cocktail bitters, pantry essentials, and eclectic mercantile all packed into one sweet space in Seattle’s hip Capitol Hill neighborhood.

A while back we had the pleasure of exploring the shop and chatting with its owner, Karyn Schwartz, who treated us to some chocolate-covered edamame while explaining her passion for natural medicine. SugarPill’s essence is really in the name. The shop is a sort of non-pharmacy devoted to making patrons feel better one tea, tincture, salt, or locally-made chocolate bar at a time.

Schwartz has paired the practical with the indulgent, emphasizing the comforting, playful side of health and wellness.

We especially enjoyed browsing SugarPill’s selection of bitters, a welcome addition to our home bar. After purchasing a spritzer of Urban Moonshine maple bitters we promptly headed home and concocted an Old Vermont:
Old Vermont
- 1 3/4 oz. gin (London dry style)
- 1/4 oz grade B maple syrup
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz fresh orange juice
- 3 dashes Urban Moonshine Maple Bitters
- Ice cubes
Shake all ingredients vigorously and strain into a chilled glass. Top off with 2 dashes of Maple Bitters for a full-bodied, aromatic experience.
Cheers and be sure to pay a visit to SugarPill if you’re in town.
